In 1984 mermaids were featured in on different gates that guarded entrances into the New Orleans Worlds Fair. Blaine Kern of Mardi Gras World and Blaine Kern Studios created the mermaids. One was featured on the City Gate. The other, shown in the top photo, courtesy of Bill Cotter, was featured on the Bridge Gate.
The bottom photo is the remains of one of the mermaid gate still remaining at Kern Studios (not to be confused with Mardi Gras World):
